TRANSCRIPT
When illness strikes or physical pain flares, it can feel like your entire world has shrunk to the borders of your body.
Pain has a way of capturing our absolute attention, pulling us into an exhausting loop of suffering—what Buddhism calls Samsara.
Your mind begins to race with fear, anxiety, and self-criticism, which only tightens the physical knot of discomfort.
But in this very moment, you are not helpless. It is time for a Buddha Weekly Emergency Mantra Time Out.
For the next ten minutes, we invite you to step entirely out of your day, your worries, and your struggle.
Close your doors, silence your notifications, and give yourself permission to simply be. This is your sacred space of self-care and healing. Join together here in this virtual place of healing with Buddha Weekly.
This quick Mantra Time Out was made possible through the generosity of Buddha Weekly’s donors, patrons and supporting members. Thank you to our Dharma heroes.

Let’s ground this with some facts and Buddhist teachings, starting with the question: How can repeating a few syllables actually help my physical body heal?
The short answer is Buddhist healing practices help support your wholistic health and well-being —and modern science agrees.
Cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School spent over thirty years demonstrating how repetitive meditation and mantra chanting trigger what he called the “Relaxation Response”. For citations to his findings and other references in a quick guide, see the video details and the linked feature.
This biological shift, this “relaxation response” decreases your metabolism, lowers your blood pressure, and slows your heart rate.
Even more astonishing, separate clinical studies show that mantra repetition causes the left and right hemispheres of your brain to synchronize, boosting your immune system’s killer T-cells and increasing antibodies to fight off viruses.
Research published in Psychosomatic Medicine even suggests that loving-kindness and repetitive sound meditations can literally slow cellular aging by preserving our telomeres.
In the ancient Sanskrit language, the word Mantra translates literally to “Mind Protection”.
By turning your mind’s powerful, focused attention back onto your body through sound and visualization, you unlock your body’s natural, innate capacity to heal and restore its vital life force known as Chi in Buddhism, or Prana in Sanskrit and in Tibetan La.
And the most beautiful part? Mantras work whether you have faith in them or not.
In Mahayana Buddhism, we turn to the Medicine Buddha, Bhaishajyaguru, the King of Lapis Lazuli Light. In Vajrayana Buddhism, he is also the King of Medicine, and one of his most powerful practices, La Gug, is directly associated with the blue healing light of Medicine Buddha.
He is known as the “First Doctor,” representing the ultimate healing potential that resides within your own Buddha Nature. In Tibetan Traditional Medicine, the patron is almost always Medicine Buddha.
Before achieving enlightenment, he swore twelve sacred vows, promising that any being who is sick, disabled, or oppressed by suffering would be cured, comforted, and restored to perfect health simply by hearing his name or reciting his mantra.
While Medicine Buddha acts as our general practitioner for all ailments, the Buddhist tradition also has “specialists” for aggressive, life-threatening conditions like cancer. And, of course, none of these practices removes your responsibility to seek proper medical care. Think of these practices as supportive.
Aside from the best known Medicine Buddha, in times of severe crisis, teachers recommend the practice of Black Manjushri — a fierce, assertive aspect of wisdom that aggressively cuts through toxins, pollution, and terminal illness. For long life practices and general health we also turn to White Tara, Amitayus Buddha and Ushnisha Vijaya. For agressive healing of the body, life force and mind we also have Vasjrapani Hayagriva Garuda, known as the three fierce ones.
For serious illness, plague, epidemics and widespread disease, we often turn to Parnashavari Tara, also known as Tara Dressed in Leaves, and the 20th of the 21 Taras. Her mantra is famous for stopping epidemics. For all of these mantras, see the linked videos at the information icon.
But today, we will align with the serene, universal healing energy of the Medicine Buddha. No initiation or previous training is required. He is famous for restoring lost life force or Chi or La. Medicine Buddha is the only La Gug or life restoration practice recommended without empowerment.
We visualize his blue light going out to the entire Universe and collecting and returning your lifeforce, which might be thought of in other traditions as soul. This is a form of “soul recovery” known as La Gug in Tibetan Buddhism. See our links at the information icon with teachings and guided videos for La Gug practice for more in depth information. Because of the wholesome, infallable protection of Medicine Buddha this is a safe, life-affirming practice.
Let’s begin our practice. Sit comfortably, either on a cushion or in a chair. Keep your spine straight but relaxed.
Gently close your eyes, and let go of any tension in your shoulders, your jaw, and your face.
Visualize, about one meter in front of you, the Medicine Buddha. He is not a solid, heavy statue—his body is made of pure, transparent blue light, shining like a sapphire in a clear sky. Blue light is associated with healing light, and the light of your Buddha Nature, whose seat in Buddhism is at your heart chakra. All beings in the Universe have Buddha Nature. It connects all of us with the Enlightened mind of Buddha.
A Blue Hum syllable represents this Buddha Nature. Now, breathing in deeply, remembeirng your breath is Chi or Prana, visualize the Medicine Buddha in front of you. At his heart, visualize a glowing seed-syllable, hūṃ. From this symbol, a stream of brilliant, shining lapis lazuli blue light begins to pour out, shining out in all directions, but it especially is focused on you.
Feel this divine light entering your own heart chakra in the centre of your chest.
As this blue light fills your body, imagine it is purifying light. See all the obstacles and pain in your body, all the disease and negativity, all the hate and jealousy and clinging and anger and greed dissolving into black smoke and leaving your body. Only the blue light remains. This healing medicine light dissolves all your physical pain, inflammation, and sickness. See the disease and negative karma leaving your body as harmless black smoke or sludge, evaporating into the air.
Now, visualize a medicine bowl in the Medicine Buddha’s left hand. It is filled with a luminous, pearlescent blue medicinal nectar.
This nectar begins to flow like a gentle waterfall, entering your crown. It is deeply nourishing, cool, and blissful.
It repairs your cells, strengthens your immune system, and creates a glowing, impenetrable field of protection around you.
You are filled with light. You are filled with nectar. You are safe. If you have a particular center of pain or disease, focus your mind, and this blue visualized healing light on that area.
Now, restore your life energy, your prana or Chi. See the same Blue Light of medicine going out to every corner of the Universe. See it collecting and drawing back your own lost Chi or life force or Prana from the Universe. This energy and life force is lost over the years through stress, anxiety, illness through the cycle of our life in Samsara. See all of that lost Chi or Prana being drawn back now, from the Universe, and into your own body, strengthening your life force, reinforcing your immune system, enriching your own Buddha Nature. Only good energy returns, due to the protective light of Medicine Buddha.
As you visualize this healing light entering now your own heart, chant along with Hrishikesh Sonar and the Buddha Weekly band, the beautiful Medicine Buddha’s healing mantra together. You can either chant along, blessing your speech, or simply listen, blessing your ear sense or hearing. Let the vibration of each syllable resonate in your throat and chest and in your ears.
In the tradition there are benefits from both hearing and chanting or speaking. There are additional benefits from visualizing as we’ve suggested. Each opens one of our sense gate ways — in this case hearing, speech and mind gateways — to the purifying and healing energy of Medicine Buddha.
We will use the traditional Sanskrit Pronunciation, which is highly accessible and practiced by millions daily. Turn on CC to chant along.
