Choekhor Duchen, also called Chokhor Duchen celebrates the First Teaching of Buddha — the first turning of the Dharma. Of the four Holy Days dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha each year,  Chokhor Duchen, the “First Teaching” celebration — the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma — is the most important. In Buddhism, we take refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, but the Dharma — the teachings — is considered the most important. The true refuge is in Buddha’s teachings and the conduct and practices he taught — and no teaching was more important than the first discourse.

NOTE: In non-Tibetan Buddhist traditions, a similar holiday is celebrated as Magha Puja or Mahapuja, this year on March 6, 2023. To see more about Mahapuja day in 2023, visit>>
