🌟🌟🌟 The Sapta Atītabuddha Karshaṇīya Dhāraṇī (Sanskrit), here sung by Buddha Weekly Bands lead Hrishikesh Sonar, is famous for purifying fixed karma — even heinous karma from both current and past lives — invoking the blessings of the Seven Successive Buddhas. It is also known as the Seven Buddhas' Sin Eradication Dhāraṇī (七佛滅罪真言, Qī Fó Miè Zuì Zhēnyán), and is one of the most powerful Mahayana Buddhist mantras used to purify negative karma, eliminate spiritual obstacles, and avert calamities. 🌟🌟🌟 🌟🌟🌟 🌟

It’s essence is inviting the blessings, purity, and essence of the Seven Past Buddhas (including Shakyamuni Buddha). It is widely practiced across East Asian Buddhist traditions and is famously grouped within the Ten Small Mantras (十小咒) chanted during daily monastic morning recitations.

🌟🌟 🌟Here Hrishikesh Sonar and the Buddha Weekly band powerfully chant the Sanskrit purifying Dharani Mantra of the Seven Buddhas in three sets of 7 repetitions. Each set is separated by devotional chanting of the Namos to the Seven Buddhas by name.

The 7 Successive Buddhas include our Gautama Shakyamuni Buddha, and the six previous Buddhas born in previous eras. It is practiced in all schools and traditions and lineages of Buddhism, including Theravadan, Mahayana, and Vajrayana.

Inviting the blessing of the Seven Successive Buddhas empowers vast, irresistable purification of negative karma, not only in our present life, but the sins of our past lives that may still be ripening in our current life. It is considered the most powerful purification mantra. Many other Buddhist mantras purify our current karma, but only this mantra, and a few others, have the profound vibrant energy necessary to purify even fixed karma from previous lives.

‘Namo Bhagavate’ – I pay homage to the Blessed One, the Bhagavan, the One who has conquered the four maras of delusion.
‘Aparimitāyur’ – This is the core. Aparimita means ‘Boundless’ or ‘Immeasurable.’ Ayur means ‘Life’ or ‘Vitality.’ So we bow to the ‘Boundless Life.’

‘Oṁ Sarva Saṃskāra Pariśuddha Dharmate’ – Sarva means ‘All.’ Saṃskāra means ‘Conditioned phenomena’ or ‘Mental formations.’ Pariśuddha means ‘Thoroughly Purified.’ Dharmate means ‘The nature of reality’ or ‘Dharmata.’
‘Gagaṇa Samudgate’ – Gagaṇa is ‘Space’—the vast, open sky. Samudgate means ‘Risen to’ or ‘Transcended to.’‘Svabhāva Pariśuddhe’ – ‘Naturally and utterly pure in its own essence.’
‘Mahānaya’ – Mahā means ‘Great.’ Naya means ‘Guidance,’ ‘Method,’ or ‘Path.’ It is the Great Vehicle, the profound path of Bodhicitta.
‘Parivāre’ – Means ‘Retinue’ or ‘Entourage.’ This signifies all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma protectors who surround the Buddha of Boundless Life.
‘Svāhā’ – This is the final consecration. It means ‘So be it,’ ‘Hail,’ or ‘May the blessings take root.’ It is the offering of the heart, the sealing of the prayer into reality.
‘Aparimitāyur Puṇya Jñāna Saṃbhāro Pacite’ – This is the crucial turning point. It translates to: ‘One who is perfected (or adorned) by the accumulation of merit and wisdom of immeasurable life.’

Devout Vajrayana Buddhists chant the Bhyo! Sanskrit Mantra for protection from the most wrathful aspect of Mother Tara, every day, and especially on the 29th of the lunar month (this month July 13) to request protection for the coming month. Great Palden Lhamo -- the "Glorious Goddess" is the form of Tara who never leaves Samsara, fighting to save all beings in the "Ocean of Suffering" symbolized in her Thankhas -- and this video -- as an "ocean of blood." She will be the last to exit the ocean of suffering, only after she has collected every disease and poison in her saddle bag -- saving us all from suffering.

bhyo rakṣa mo
"O Goddess, protect me!"
A fierce, vocative particle addressing Palden Lhamo directly. Rakṣa (protect) is an urgent, heart-felt command offered with devotion. Mo reminds us she is the divine feminine protector — motherly yet wrathful.

bhyo bhyo rakṣa mo
"O Goddess, O Goddess — protect me!"

tṛuṁ bhyo
"Hear me, O Goddess!"
Tṛuṁ is the heart-seed of her power, the condensed essence of her ability to overcome all forces that harm the dharma. It vibrates at the point where compassion meets fierceness.

kha-kṛṣṇa-vastrā
"She whose garment is the black sky"
This phrase replaces the Tibetan kha la rak chen mo with pure Sanskrit. Kha (sky), kṛṣṇa (black/dark/unmanifest), vastrā (garment). She does not wear a black cloak — she wears space itself. Her robe is the night sky, infinite and empty, yet utterly present. Wherever you are, she is already there.

"Protect me, O Goddess"
The plea returns, strengthened by the vision of her sky-cloak. Renewed devotion.

avyāt tṛuṁ bhyo
"May she never depart — O Goddess of the heart-seed!"
A vow-seal. May the tṛuṁ in her heart and mine never fade. May she abide with me until enlightenment.

rulu rulu
Meaning "Hahaha! / The rattle of the reins / The thunder of her laughter"
The fierce, mocking laughter of Palden Lhamo as she tramples ego and fear.

"So be it! O Goddess! So be it!"
Hūṁ is the vajra seed syllable of enlightened wrathful compassion. Hūṁ — it is done. Hūṁ — it is sealed.

🕯️ WHO IS PALDEN LHAMO?
Palden Lhamo means "Glorious Goddess" — the Tibetan name for Śrī Devī in Sanskrit.
She is the wrathful form of Tara, specifically the 11th Tara, who in her peaceful aspect is known as Vasudhara (the Goddess of Abundance).
In Chinese Buddhism, her peaceful form appears as Mahāśrī Devī (Great Goddess of Good Fortune), and her mantra is included among the Ten Small Mantras.
Though she appears wrathful, she is fully enlightened. Her fierce appearance is the compassionate expression of her power to:
Cut through fear
Dispel obstacles
Protect all beings in the ocean of suffering
She is the one "who wears the black sky as her cloak" — in Sanskrit: kha-kṛṣṇa-vastrā, in Tibetan: kha la rak chen mo.

🙏 HOW TO PRACTICE
Who can chant this mantra?
Anyone as a Puja or Offering or supplication practice. As a Tara — albeit wrathful — she is an Enlightened Goddess. Anyone can make offerings and chant her mantra with her visualized in front of them.
How to visualize:
Normally, she is not a Yidam for self-generation
Begin with your own Yidam practice — for example, visualizing yourself as Tara or Avalokiteśvara
Visualize Palden Lhamo appearing in front of you as you make offerings
See her dark cloak expanding to cover the horizon — feel held, hidden, and guarded by her power
Offerings:
Black tea is traditional and preferred
Offer with devotion, visualizing it transforming into nectar
