🌙 UPAVASATHA or RENEWAL or PURIFICATION Day

The New Moon, 30th Lunar Day — is a traditional time for renewal, especially for:
    ✅ Deep self-reflection (like a spiritual mirror)
✅ Releasing negative patterns (karma-clearing mantras)
    ✅ Manifesting wisdom (Buddha’s third-quarter blessing)

    How to Participate and Purify

🙏 🙏 🙏 Generally, Lama Zopa advised: “New Moon is “good for all practices” such as your Yidam or any other Dharma practice with MERIT MULTIPLED, and especially any renewal of vows.

    Shakyamuni Buddha Resources

Traditionally on this day, we recite Sutras or Suttas, Parittas, and especially the Seven Buddhas Practice, the SAPTABUDDHAKA 7 BUDDHA MANTRAS IN SANSKRIT, and the supreme Maha Jayamangala Gatha , Buddha’s Joyous Victor. Ideally we do a Puja and full practice with offerings, and chant his mantra. Resources follow:

SaptaBuddhaka 7 Buddhas Mantras (with Refuge)

Maha Jayamangala Gatha: Buddha’s Joyous Victory (with Refuge):

Praise of Shakyamuni Buddha’s 12 Deeds (English) with Shakyamuni’s mantra:

The Muni Mantra — Mantra of Shakyamuni Buddha

Chanted by Hrishikesh Sonar and Buddha Weekly Band:

Shakyamuni Puja (Recited rather than chanted) famous for purifying all Karma

    Other Renewal and Purifying Practices

Other Practices strongly recommended for purification and renewal include any YIDAM — the essence of all Yidams is the same — and especially Vajrasattva, Ushnisha Vijaya and any renewing of vows practices. Here’s our practice reources to help you.

    🙏 🙏 🙏 VAJRASATTVA PRACTICE

The most famous (and effective) pratice for Purification of negative karma and obstacles. BEAUTIFUL 15-MINUTES VIDEO PRACTICE WITH MANTRAS HERE on Buddha Weekly:

🙏 🙏 🙏 VAJRASATTVA 100-Syllable Mantra (here chanted for 2 full hours, but any amount of practice is amazing).

🙏 🙏 🙏 USHNISHA VIJAYA NAMGYALMA SUPREME DHARANI

    🙏 🙏 🙏 SUTRA RECITATION

Sutra recitation is purifying and meritorious, in any language. HEART SUTRA is highly recommended, here chanted in SANSKRIT:

    🙏 🙏 🙏 SAMANTABHADRA’s KING OF PRAYERS

This the supreme practice for purification and merit in  Mahayana traditions, and includes ALL SEVEN LIMBS OF PRACTICE (here chanted beautifully in Sanskrit):

    🙏 🙏 🙏 MAHA VAIROCHANA’s MANTRA OF LIGHT

Purifies all obstacles and hindrances with supreme wisdom. VERY BEAUTIFULLY CHANTED in SANSKRIT by Hrishkesh Sonar and Buddha Weekly Band:

🙏 🙏 🙏 FIVE BUDDHA VOWS TO RENEW YOUR SAMAYA

FULL KARMA “Repair” – Well known practice (here recited in English) with vows of good conduct to the five Buddha Families and renewal of Bodhisattva Vows. (8 Minute recite-along practice):
