All dharmas in their own-being are pure; in my own-being I too am pure.

Because this is, perhaps, the most powerful of all Buddhist affirmations due to it’s simple essence, its practical application in our everyday lives is vast.

🛶 The Great Voyage: Buddha's Map to the Far Shore
First taught by the 6th-century Tiantai patriarch Zhiyi in his Mohe Zhiguan, this ancient metaphor maps Avalokiteshvara's six forms onto the six realms of Samsara — and onto the six poisons that keep us trapped. In Vajrayana, the same teaching is called "closing the gates." Same truth, different maps.
One by one, we face each poison — and watch our Captain transform to pacify it:

A grief attack is a full-body nervous system event — not just sadness. It mimics the physical process of dying: crushing chest pressure, dry mouth, cold sweats, gasping breath. The body believes it is dying because the mind believes it is dying.
✅ The pain is real, but the permanence is an illusion. Like a phantom limb, the agony is 100% real, but the source is empty. The panic is not your identity — it is an impermanent weather pattern caused by attachment (raga) and aversion (dvesha).
✅ Don’t feed the innate demon. The initial wave is unavoidable, but the secondary reaction — I’m going to die, this will never end, I can’t survive this — is optional.
✅ Three anchors for the acute phase (from Guru Rinpoche):
Body: Drop your shoulders, unclench your hands. Short-circuit the biofeedback loop.
Speech: Stop talking. Rest like a mute. Cut off the verbal fuel.
Mind: Refuse to fabricate future storylines. Stay in the current millisecond.
✅ One breath is enough. The Maranasati Sutta says the truly heedful person lives within the interval of a single in-breath or out-breath. You don’t have to survive the rest of your life without them — just this one breath. This plunges you into the “deathless” present, where time — and therefore grief — cannot exist.
✅ Slow the breath to hack the mind. Deep, slow exhaling stimulates the vagus nerve, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and chemically signaling the fight-or-flight response to stand down.
You are not alone. Kisagotami’s story reveals that every house has known death. Your grief is not a unique curse — it is the shared burden of all humanity. This realization breaks the isolation.
✅ A cloud never dies. Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching: matter and energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed. You aren’t grieving your loved one’s destruction — you’re grieving their transformation.
✅ Eat the poison (metaphorically). The peacock transmutes venom into radiant feathers. Acceptance rather than aversion transmutes your personal agony into deep universal compassion. The grief doesn’t disappear — it becomes purpose.
✅ Ritual replaces helplessness with love in motion. Whether guiding words, gentle touch, or chanted mantra, devotional practices give the grieving person a focal point of supreme compassion — a final, beautiful, actionable gift to the dying.
✅ Einstein’s comfort: The distinction between past, present, and future is a stubbornly persistent illusion. Your loved one is woven permanently into the fabric of the cosmos — and into your very being. The separation you feel is just the mind struggling to comprehend the scale of transformation.
The wave will pass. The connection remains. Keep breathing.
