One of the most commonly asked questions in Buddhism is: “If Guanyin Pusa, or Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, or Mother Tara — who are in essence one nature — can rescue all beings, as promised in the Universal Gate Sutra:

“Why is there still suffering in the world?”

“Why does Avalokiteshvara or Guan Yin or Tara have countless forms and names?”

    Video:

We try to answer both of these questions, and much more, in this in-depth look at the Universal Mother Buddha.

We end with a beautiful song by 3 Gems Band, the Guan Yin Rescue Song that celebrates the teachings in the Universal Gate Sutra. @3GemsBand

Buddha’s promise in the Universal Gate Sutra, is that Guan Shi Yin or Avalokiteshvara or Tara can rescue beings who simply uphold the name of the Bodhisattva. Ten fears and dangers are mentioned, one by one, in the Sutra. In the song Guanyin Rescue Song, 3 Gems Band sings of the same fears and dangers in their Sutra-based chant, together with beautiful Namo Guan Shi Yin Pusa chanting.

    SONG LYRICS TRANSLATION

Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà  (Namo Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva)

If there are people who wish to harm you

By heat, anger, fire, or hate

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

Heat, anger, rage, will be cooled

Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà (Namo Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva)

If you are drifting in a great ocean

And facing imminent danger and harm

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

Storms, torrents and all dangers will be calmed

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

If you are at the peak of the summit

And jealous enemies try to push you

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

You will not fall and tumble from your heights

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

If you suffer from great persecutions

You wail and despair of your very life

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

Your tormentors will be shaken and flee

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

If you are being locked in a prison

and your hands and feet are bound by fetters

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

Chains will fall away and you will be free

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

Facing harm from vicious ghosts or zombies

    Poisonous dragons, terrible demons,

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

No one will be able to torment you

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

If you are surrounded by evil beasts

Snarling with dripping fangs and fearful claws

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

Evil beasts will flee and scamper away

    Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà

    If war around you threatens

Enemies close in and mean you great harm

    Think only of Guan-Shi-Yin Pusa

All your enemies will flee and retreat
