  1. I strongly resonate with this image of Kurukulla, and I appreciate your using it as it shows a bit of different interpretation of the text more in line with Chagdud Khadro’s interpretation of the line related to Kurukulla’s age as 16– not pointing to the body of a 16 year old but instead to the 16 types of Bliss (see her youtube talk on Kurukulla for more). I have contacted Rubin museum but they are unable to identify the larger work from which this detail was taken. Can anyone identify which painting this image comes from? Thanks so much!

    1. Dear Bruce, Thank you. Yes, it’s beautiful. This is a detail from a larger masterpiece of the full Padma mandala of Hayagriva. You’ll find the full painting here in our feature on Hayagriva https://buddhaweekly.com/whats-special-hayagriva-wrathful-heruka-emanation-amitabha-horse-head-erupting-fiery-hair-literally-neighs-hrih-scream-wisdom/
In this painting, Hayagriva Sang Drub (Secret Accomplishment, Sakya lineage and also Gelug) is central, with the full merit field surrounding him with Kurukulla in the top right, 12-Armed Ganapati (a special protector of the lineage) in the upper right, Begtse Chen in the center front, Black Mahakala left front and Shri Devi Palden Lhamo in the front right. It’s a stunning painting, and you get an idea of scope by the fact this Kurukulla close up is a detail on the larger masterpiece. The other details are:
      Origin Location Tibet
      Date Range 1800 – 1899
      Lineages Sakya
Material Ground Mineral Pigment on Cotton
      Collection Rubin Museum of Art
      Catalogue # acc.# P2000.19.3
      Hope that helps. In kindness,
