Feature Contents

Venerable Zasep Rinpoche commented (from Mongolia) on the meaning of Black Manjushri’s powerful mantra:

“Greetings from Mongolia. I have experience especially of Black Manjushri practice and mantric healing — it is very powerful. You could pass my translation on to others  whoever you think needs it. May all obstacles and hindrances of Vajra disciples be completely gone — Shin Tem kuru soha !”

Venerable Rinpoche commented by email from Mongolia on the Black Manjushri Mantra (July 10, 2026 just before entering Chod Retreat) (as requested by the editor of Buddha Weekly, to explain the meaning of the 3 Gems performance of the Sanskrit Mantra here).

NOTE: Rinpoche explained the essence of the mantra:

Rinpoche’s commentary of the essence. It means: “Stop all sickness, all kinds of cancer, all epidemic, all Doons (mental and physical illness )  all harms, all bad signs, all obstacles, all malicious harm caused by sorcery, all black magic and curses, all who bear grudges, all misfortune and calamity , all bad omens, all inauspiciousness, all Maras and the messengers of Yama ( evil )  all obscuration and all obstacles for Dharma practice disappear completely.”

🙏🙏🙏 Black Manjushri, who appears wrathful to symbolize his powerful activity to overcome even the most malignant obstacles, is one of the most strongly recommended practices and mantras for aggressive healing, where life is in danger or disease is persistent.

    🔊 THE SACRED SYLLABLES

🙏 oṃ    “I prostrate to the enlightened body, speech, and mind.

🙏  trāsvā cūsvā turtasvā turmisvā — A sequence of wrathful, purifying syllables. These are ancient bija (seed) sounds that invoke the power to pacify, cut through, and consume disease, negative karma, and obscurations at their root. Each syllable has “sva” suffix  (“The Tibetan “SÖ” )

🙏 hṛdaya-dvāre — “At the door of the heart.” The heart chakra or center is where we visualize Black Manjushri’s healing light entering and from where the healing emanates outward.

🙏 cō khāla — “Cut, sever, consume.” Invokes the fierce, compassionate activity of Black Manjushri to remove obstacles and pathogens (physical, energetic, and spiritual).

🙏 jā — “Arise” or “be born” — the healing power manifests.

🙏  kaṃ śaṃ traṃ — Seed syllables of space (kaṃ), peace (śaṃ), and protection (traṃ) . Together, they purify the three gates (body, speech, mind) and establish a field of healing stability.

🙏 bhya  — A shortened form of bhaya (fear) —here meaning “enter the heart” or “overcome fear” (or cut fear — it is juxtopositioned next to “phaṭ” which is to “cut” .

🙏 phaṭ — A wrathful, forceful syllable that usually means “cut” or “shatter” — shatters disease, obstacles, and negativity.

🙏 svāhā — “So be it” or “may it be established.” A standard closing that seals the mantra’s power and dedicates it to its purpose. svā (स्वा) means “to go,” “to impel,” “to set in motion”
