Hayagrīvavidyā — Hayagriva’s Great Dharani as a Practice: Wrathful Compassion Overcomes all Obstacles

Hayagrivavidya, which means literally “Hayagriva’s Wisdom” or “Correct Knowledge of Hayagriva”, is the great Dharani Mantra of Hayagriva Buddha practice, with the power to cut or destroy:
- Destroy evil spells, black magic, negative mantras
- Destroy evil planetary influences
- Destroy all poisons
- Destroy all obstacles
- Destroy the suffering of Samsara
- Bring Demons and planets under control
- Destroy anger and hate in the hearts of enemies
- Bring all beings to Bodhi, to the state of Enlightenment.
The Dharani (listen only version)
In this version, we have audio only for the release. It begins with the Tea Offering Praise then @3GemsBand chants the entire great Dharani (lyrics below):

Padmasamhava’s Main Yidam
Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava’s main Yidam was Hayagriva, this according to the great Dakini Yeshe Tsogyal as quoted in the book Lady of the Lotus Born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal.
She wrote ”He arose in the form of Padma Heruka, ferocious and strong, the heruka of the secret sign.” Hayagriva was also the main Yidam of the great Yogi Shakbar.
This emphasizes the importance of Dharma Teachings. Hayagriva is the Heruka or hero aspect of Amitabha Buddha, and he represents Dharma Speech.
Even Insects can Benefit from the Mantra
His mantra is so powerful, that the Sutra of Forming Hayagriva proclaims,
“Whoever, including even the insects, has heard the name and mantra of Hayagriva only one time will never again fall into the lower paths.”
Hayagriva mantra chanted by Buddha Weekly Band:
For these reasons, and because Hayagriva’s mandala still exists in our earthly realm, protected by great Dakinis, his Mantra and Dharani are special.
Although we need empowerment to “arise as Hayagriva” as a Yidam, the sound of Hayagriva — his mantra, name and his Great Dharani are beneficial for any being, as explained the Sutra of Forming Hayagriva.
Listen and chant along (embedded below), this beautiful composition and vocals of the 3GemsBand as they chant the great Dharani in Sanskrit. They begin with a praise in English, followed by the Sanskrit mantra, then the Great Dharani, the Hayagrivavidya, which means literally “Hayagriva’s Wisdom” or “Correct Knowledge of Hayagriva.”
Here, we offer a translation of the great Dharani, which can increase wisdom and activity.

In the song, embedded above, the @3GemsBand starts with the daily tea offering may of us offer each day to Hayagriva to ask for blessings, here sung in English, followed by the Sanskrit Dharani in full:
Hrīḥ Hayagriva, the nine gaited king,
Majestic aspect of Amitabha
I sing praises to you, fierce compassion
Who vanquishes all foes of the Dharma
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum
Hrih, you Hayagriva cast your fierce gaze
On the trouble-makers and evil ones
Your resounding three neighs calm five poisons
You act with peace, increase, power and wrath
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
oṃ hrīḥ Padman Tatro Vajra Krodha Hayagriva Hulu Hulu Hum phaṭ
Increase our life, merit, glory, and wealth,
Myself, friends, family and all beings
Most powerful of enlightened heroes
I sing your praises and your Dharani
