Spring Equinox: RENEWAL: Kunzang Monlam, Higan-e and other Renewal Practices!
🙏 🙏 🙏 SPRING EQUINOX!! Practices on Spring Equinox are particularly potent due to the the energy of the equinox. The equinox is considered a time of heightened spiritual energy when the days and nights are of equal length, encouraging balance in one’s practice. It is seen as a time for releasing old energy and cultivating positive karma.
🙏 March Equinox 2026 and 2027 is March 20
✅ Kunzang Monlam: On the spring equinox, many Tibetan Buddhists perform the Kunzang Monlam (Aspiration Prayer of Kuntuzangpo). This is a profound prayer focusing on the awakening of awareness and the, dissolving of confusion and habitual patterns.
✅ Higan-e is a service held twice a year, at the spring and fall equinox in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
✅ Renewal of Vows: Bodhisattva Vow and Refuge are very important on Spring Equinox to purify and restore.
✅ Samatabhadra’s King of Prayers is a powerful Spring Equinox practice, containing the seven limbs of practice. Chanted here in Sanskrit:
✅ Practicing the 8 Bodhisattva Mantras is also very powerful for purification (chanted her in Sanskrit with Refuge, offerings and the mantras with dedication): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeumiL-🌿 In all traditions, the Spring Equinox is the time of renewal as spring arrives. We usually begin with purification practices according to our own traditions, such as Vajrasattva purification, Prostration to the 35 Buddhas Practice, and especially Renewal of Vows to remove the negativity of downfalls and negative karma.
👉 Especially powerful is the practice of Renewing Vows with the Five Buddhas, and chanting the 10 Auspicious Mantras. This practice purifies, restores and brings blessings for spring:The equinox is when the weather is mild, not too hot and not too cold, and when nature is in harmony. Thus it is a time for reflection and meditation on this harmony in one’s own spiritual life.

🙏 🙏 🙏 Higan
Higan is a word that means “the other shore” of Enlightenment. The Higan season should be used to reflect on the path of understanding the Six Paramitas (Perfections). The Six Paramitas are:
- Dana (giving)
- Sila (behavior or discipline)
- Kisanti (patience)
- Virya (endeavor)
- Dhyana (meditation), and
- Prajna (wisdom)
